七、示范段落

264.  There is a general debate on campuses today over the phenomenon of college students’ doing a part-time job. Those who object to it argue that students should not spend their precious time in this way. But people who advocate it, on the other hand, claim that, by taking a major-related part-time job or summer job, students can not only improve their academic studies, but gain much experience, the experience they will never be able to get from textbooks.

265.  In conclusion, health is more important than wealth. Those who are rich but lose their health are no more happy and fortunate than those who are poor. If you want your wish to come true, health is the most important ingredient (成份)of your success.

266.  Nowhere in the world has the issue of birth control (计划生育) been more evident than in China. The nation is faced with such serious situation as the one in which its population is increasing much faster than the supply of food and available resources.

267.  The funny thing about it is that you pay dearly for the “privilege” of living in such terrible    urban environment. Traffic is so heavy that a bus ride has become a small ordeal (苦难经历). The acute (尖锐的) housing shortage makes people live in tiny flats where even country pigs would disdain (蔑视) to go.

268.  Nor is the city without its moments of beauty. There is something comforting about the warm glow shed by advertisements on cold wet winter nights. Few things could be more impressive than the peace that descends on deserted city streets at weekends when the thousands that travel to work everyday are tucked away in their homes in the country.

269.  … fierce debate arose over the pros and cons of trying to clone a human being…. I certainly don’t subscribe to the view that whatever technology permits us to do we ought to do. Nor do I subscribe to the view that the Constitution necessarily guarantees every individual the right to reproduce through whatever means become technically possible. Rather, my concern is that the very decision to use the law to condemn, and then outlaw, patterns of human reproduction----- especially by appealing to vague notions of what is “natural”------ is at least as dangerous as the technologies such a decision might be used to control. Should University Campus Be Open to Tourists?

University campuses, especially those of the renowned universities, have recently become the new tourist attractions. Pros and cons have been put forward concerning this new phenomenon.

Some people are quite in favor of the campus’ opening to tourists while others are opposed to it. The opening of campus will stimulate the tourist industry, but the easier access to campus will lead to some accidents or security problems which will interfere in students’ life.

In my opinion, campuses can be open to tourists once a week, say, on Saturday or Sunday. This suggestion, I believe, is quite feasible because it could kill two birds with one stone. For one ting, campuses could attract many tourists on weekends, thus boosting the tourism. For another, restricted opening of campus will beneficially narrow the gap between campuses and the outside world. Furthermore, this will also attract more public attention and build a great reputation for the university.

Say No to Pirated Products

As is known to all, piracy has become a more and more serious problem, which hinders our economic development. In many computers, we can find pirated Microsoft “Windows” software. In many DVD stores, we can see pirated products.
Why is there piracy? As far as I know, there are two reasons. To begin with, pirated products are much cheaper than legal ones. Take “Windows” as an example. The legal “Windows” software costs us thousands of yuan, while a pirated one costs only 5 yuan. What’s more, people don’t realize the harms of buying pirated products. When it comes to the harms of piracy, we can cite a lot. In the first place, producing pirated products is similar to “theft”, which is illegal. In the second place, companies will be unwilling to create good products unless their intellectual property rights are well protected.
Serious as the problem seems, we can come up with some measures to deal with it. First of all, the government must make stricter laws to prevent people from producing pirated products. Then as consumers, we should be lawful citizens and refrain from buying them. Only through these measures can we hope to solve the problem.

Teacher’s Day

How time flies! Another Teacher’s Day has cone around. I’d like to send my best wishes to all of the teachers. I hope that every one of your will be happy and healthy forever!

I think I’m very lucky because every teacher I met was so kind and helpful. Miss Wang was my class teacher in the middle school. She was a young lady who was very patient and kind hearted. We all liked her. One cold morning, we were all standing on the playground, listening to the talking of our headmaster. The talking last for about forty minutes and was still going on. I got up late that morning and didn’t have time to eat anything. So I felt very uncomfortable standing there for long. Suddenly I couldn’t see anything and fell to the ground… when I came around, I found myself lying on the bed. Miss Wang was looking at me anxiously beside the bed. “Where are we?” “We are in the hospital.” How scared was I when you fainted! Now, have a good rest and remember to have breakfast each morning, okay?” later, my classmates told me that Miss Wang rushed to me the second she saw me fainted and hold me tight all through the way to the hospital at that time. She was so nervous that everyone mistook me as her own child.

I will never forget what you’ve done to me, Miss Wang. I am trying my best to learn the knowledge and I’d like to become a teacher in the near future like Miss Wang, giving love to the student.

A Brief Introduction to a Tourist Attraction

Good morning, ladies and gentleman, welcome to Beijing. To begin with, I would like to introduce myself: I am the tourist guide from China Travel Service and it’s a great honor to stay here with all of you for a whole day. Just as the old saying goes, “It is always a pleasure to greet a friend from far away”I wish all of you to enjoy yourselves during this trip.

The following is the schedule of the day. The first spot we are going to visit is the Great Wall, the grandest fortification in ancient China. The next sight to look around is the Ming Tombs, which is one of the best-preserved tombs for 13 emperors in Ming Dynasty more than one thousand years ago. In the afternoon, we will go for the Summer Palace, the ro, yal park for Chinese ancient emperors.

Currently we are on the way to the Great Wall. Dating back to the seven century B.C., the Great Wall is constructed by respective states for fortifying against invasion of neighboring states. By the reasons of long history and its length, it becomes one of the eight wonders in the world and represents the highest wisdom and crafts. From the top of the Great Wall, we can enjoy a magnificent view of continuous mountains, green trees and blooming wild flowers. It is no doubt that one says, “He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man”.
Above is my introduction to the Great Wall. If any of you have questions, please feel free to ask me at any time.

A Letter of Complaint

June 19, 2004

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter to report some problems I came across recently.

On this weekend I bought an English-Chinese dictionary in a bookstore near my home since its cover is elaborately designed. But when I went home and read carefully, I found that several pages of the dictionary had been cracked. What is worse, the misprints spread everywhere in the dictionary and seriously affected my comprehension. Since there was such damage and misprint to the dictionary, I went to the bookstore to require for a replace. But to my surprise, the staff of the bookstore turned down my request rudely and even denied the poor quality of the dictionary.

It goes without saying that today’s face-paced and market-oriented economy calls for much higher standard for service industry. However, to my regret, many of the commercial organizations fail to achieve this standard and the quality of the staff needs to be improved. It’s clear that the poor quality of practitioners in the service industry will not only deeply disappoint customers but also ruin the development of our country’s economy. As a result, I hope your newspaper could remind the service industry to attach more importance to the service improvement.

Thank you for your attention!

               Sincerely yours,

Sam

Reduce Waste on Campus

As is known to all, waste on campus has become a more and more serious problem. We can easily see many students dump a lot of food in the garbage can. Some students spend thousands of yuan buying fashionable clothes and so on.

The negative effects of waste can be shown in the following aspects. In the first place, it makes some students dependent on their parents for money, which is harmful to their development. If they don’t learn to support themselves, they will be “useless people” when they graduate. In the second place, it is not easy for our parents to arrange for our schooling.

Last but not the least important, there is no denying the fact that our country is still poor. There are many people who cannot go to university and many poor people still need our help. As far as I am concerned, I should set a good example to reduce waste on campus.

A Letter in Reply to a Friend (1)

December 27th, 2003

Dear Zhou Chi,

In your last letter to me you asked for some advice in choosing your prospective major. I strongly recommend Department of Electronics Engineering of our school. Firstly, as far as the major itself is concerned, it is one of those fastest developing fields of technology these days. You know that two topics that are frequently talked about today are computers and large-scale integrated circuits, and the technology of electronics plays an indispensable part in the implementation of both of the two. Secondly, this department of our school enjoys a very good reputation in the academic world, where you can get a first-class education.

The fundamental qualifications are that you should be physically and mentally healthy and you also have to get an excellent mark in the national entrance examinations, and the latter is quite demanding.

I think it’s rather unnecessary for me to offer you very specific suggestions in attending such exams. You have already developed a proficiency in coping with fierce competitions. With your 1 percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration, you will succeed.

Yours,

 Majun

A Letter in Reply to a Friend (2)

I’m very glad to learn that you’d like to apply for admission to my university.

Since you are good at writing, I strongly recommend you major in journalism. From my point of view, you are dynamic and always curious about what happens around you. You also seem to be a good observer while having the unbelievable ability of accurate description. You are born to be an excellent journalist!

Now I should mention some important points you should pay attention to. First, you should get high grades in the College Entrance Examination, for journalism is a very popular major in our university. There’s much competition in getting enrolled. Besides the preparation for the exam, a good health condition is also necessary.

Go over all your lessons and read some books about journalism, and you will be more confident of your application. If you still have time, you’d better watch TV and read newspapers. All the above is my advice.

Try your best, and you will develop your talent to the full in the future. Good luck!

It Pays to Be Honest

“Honesty is the best policy”, as an old saying goes. As a valuable virtue, it is supposed to be cherished by people from all walks of life.

However, there are a lot of cases of dishonesty in a wide range of fields at present. In the business community, for example, even some world-famous corporations have cheated their employees and stockholders, such as Enron and the world Telecom. As a result, both of them have gone bankrupt and the CEOs of the two corporations have been severely punished. They deserved the punishment because they have seriously destroyed the confidence of the investors in the US stock market and brought about a great turmoil. Everyone should learn a lesson from that case.

Honesty is beneficial to everyone and it pays to be honest. A person always obtains friendship, happiness and respect if he or she is honest. People with integrity never pretended to be honest. They always bear it in mind. Even when they are in great trouble, they still stick to it and are willing to sacrifice any other thing for this valuable virtue. And this helps them to be respectable and successful. As university students, honesty is a basic requirement; we must keep it in mind.

Students’ Use of Computers

The picture shows the change of the hours spent by a student in a certain university on the computer per week on average. In 1990, the number is one hour, which is doubled 5 years later. In 2000, the number sharply increases to ten hours, 500% that of 1995. Students are spending too much time on computer.

The change takes place because of the usage, price and the development of the computer. Firstly, the computer is very useful today. For students, the computer can be a great help to their study; they can learn more things by going online than simply by reading books. Also, many students like chatting through or playing games on line. Secondly, the change has much to do with the low price of the computer. Thirdly, as the computer will surely play a very important role in the future, students are afraid of being backward in this respect, so they are eager to learn more about the computer. All these help to explain the increasing hours spent on the computer.

But students cannot find many computers in university computer centers and the local network is too slow. If students are given much more opportunities to use computers, they will be better prepared for the society of tomorrow.           (211 words) (20026CET-4)

Do Lucky Numbers Really Bring Good Luck?

My friend Mary was born on June 13, 1977. She is always dissatisfied with her birthday because 13 is an “evil” number. Like Mary, lots of people believe that good numbers bring good luck and bad numbers bring disasters. Hence, 13, 4, and other so-called “evil” numbers are wiped off from cards, lists, menus, etc. Even in some cities, there is no No. 13 bus or No. 13 street.

I don’t think numbers have anything to do with luck. Numbers are created for counting. There is no relationship between a certain number and one’s fate. There are many people who have succeeded in spite of a “close relationship” to bad manners. Also a lot of people, who should have been blessed by “lucky” numbers, are involved in tragic accidents. Take my friend Mary for example. She achieved a good study at the nation’s most prestigious university and later got good reputation in her career. Her luck is not a bit ruined by her “bad” birthday.

In a word, numbers are numbers. They stand for nothing but quantity. Numbers have nothing to do with luck. (184 words) (19986CET-4)

Should Private Cars Be Encouraged in China?

A heated debate on private cars is under way in china. Chinese car makers energetically urge people to buy cars, whereas most Chinese, especially people in urban areas, oppose such an idea, saying that time is not ripe for each family to own a car.

There are many reasons to encourage people to own cars. First, a car allows a person to travel long distances freely, safely, and comfortably in all weather. Second, if each family buys a car, millions of car will be needed. As a result, the auto industry, as well as many related industries, will have a booming business, which will in turn boost our economy. Furthermore, China can import advanced car making technology, instead of just importing cars. Finally, the tax paid by car drivers will accelerate construction of our highway network.

There are, on the other hand, many reasons against it. First, only rich people in China can afford their own cars. Second, cars will use too much of our limited petroleum resources, and cause many problems, such as air pollution, car accidents, and traffic jams. Third, China has a huge population, and many feel that bicycles and buses are good enough; private cars are unrealistic now. What’s more, the already overloaded poor roads cannot sustain more cars. Finally, millions of poor people are struggling to survive, how can they afford to buy expensive cars?

China is a large country. We still have to weigh every factor carefully before we make decisions about private cars. Though the number of private cars keeps on increasing, popularization of luxurious things like cars, will have to wait.                   (269 words)

Why are People Never Satisfied with What They Have?

Satisfaction is only a temporary feeling of being content, for human desire, stimulated by both physical and mental needs, connects with changes in our world, our society and ourselves. It is true that people are never satisfied with what they have in the long run and they always want something more or something different. This unsatisfactory perception, together with the desire for something more or different, exists perpetually for three major reasons.

First, the continuous emergence of new products constantly motivates people’s desire to get things new and different. For example, people replace their computers with new ones that are quicker in speed and more in functions long before their machines get worn-out. This happens as a result of the rapid development of science and technology that enables improved computers and softwares to come out into the market at a much faster speed than the speed for a computer to get old.

Second, people’s improvement in financial status invites their dissatisfaction with what they have. A good example of this is the purchase of a newer house on better location with a nicer view when one has saved enough money or when one gets a raise knowing that paying back a mortgage is not a problem.

Finally, the vanity to keep up with the neighbors and friends also spark off people’s dissatisfaction with what they have. A car is originally meant to be means of transportation. However, there are people who trade in their nicer cars for a Benz, BMW, Volvo or Luxury simply because their friends or neighbors drive these makes.

Superficially, people’s endless discontent with what they have sounds greedy and unpleasant. But it is, in fact, this discontent of our humans’ that pushes our society to continuously create things new and different to meet people’s desire. (299 words)

Homesickness

Only a person far away from home knows what homesickness is.

It is the welling-up tears in your eyes, the lump in your throat, the waving hands when the train is drawing out of the station and taking you away from home. It is the strength with which you walk the three miles to your home with heavy bags in your hands after a long tiring trip, and the halt, excitement, and hesitation at the doorstep.

It is the impatience, anxiety, misery, fear, and wild guesses when you are waiting for a letter from home. It is the never fading joy of reading it again and again in bed.

It is the unusual patience and indomitable willpower with which you go to the ticket office at midnight and stand in a long line before the small window, and the ecstasy when you at last get a ticket at ten o’clock the next morning.

It is the sudden delight of closeness that strikes you when you meet a person from the same town, or even a stranger who has just been there. It is the eagerness to ask about everything, the trees, the hills, and your dear old folks. It is the sparkling eyes when you come upon a few words about your hometown in one corner of your newspaper.

It is the fear to sing “Home, Sweet Home” in case of a burst of tears. It is the murmur of “mummy” in dreams. It is the mere thought of the homemade cake making your mouth water. And it is the small grocery next door and the shop owner’s friendly smile that keeps on appearing in your dreams.

It is the sensitiveness you begin to develop. You cannot help daydreaming at the whistle of a train, and your eyes moisten at the sight of a house or even a tree that looks like the one in your hometown. It is the unspeakable sadness that creeps over you when you stand alone in the darkening dusk and see birds flying back to their nests and everybody hurrying home.

It is the silent sigh and faint pain in your heart when you begin reading the story, “That spring forty years ago, I waved farewell to my village and my dear mother…”

So warm a word is home, and such a sweet sadness is homesickness.   (391words)

十、文学片断欣赏

An Excerpt from Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad

He was an inch, perhaps two, under six feet, powerfully built, and he advanced straight at you with a slight stoop of the shoulders, head forward, and a fixed from- under stare which made you think of a charging bull. His voice was deep, loud, and his manner displayed a kind of dogged self-assertion which he had nothing aggressive in it. It seemed a necessity, and it was directed apparently as much at himself as at anybody else. He was spotlessly neat, apparelled in immaculate white from shoes to hat, and in the various Eastern ports where he go this living as ship-chandlers water-clerk he was very popular.

       (约瑟夫·康拉德:《幸运的吉姆》)

An Excerpt from Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy

It was early the next morning--a time of sun and dew. The confused beginnings of many birds songs spread into the healthy air, and the wan blue of the heaven was here and there coated with thin webs of incorporeal cloud, which were of no effect in obscuring day. All the lights in the scene were yellow as to color, and all the shadows were attenuated as to form. The creeping plants about the old manor- house were bowed with rows of heavy water- drops, which had upon objects behind them the effect of minute lenses of high magnifying power.

(托马斯·哈代《远离尘嚣》)

An Excerpt from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

"Do you think I can stay to become nothing to you? Do you think I am an automation? --a machine without feelings, and can bear to have any morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and  my drop of living water dashed from my cup? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! --- I have as much soul as you---and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh: it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at Gods feet, equal---as we are!"                    (夏洛蒂·勃朗特《简爱》)

An Excerpt from Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy

When the autumn sun slanted over Greenhill this morning and lighted the dewy flat upon its crest, nebulous clouds of dust were to be seen floating between the pairs of hedges which streaked the wide prospect around in all directions. These gradually converged upon the base of the hill, and the flocks which led to the top. Thus in a slow procession they entered the opening to which the roads tended, multitude after multitude, horned and hornless--blue flocks and red flocks, buff flocks and brown flocks, even green and salmon- tinted flocks according to the fancy of the colorist and custom of the farm.

Men were shouting, dogs were barking, with greatest animation, but the thronging travelers in so long a journey had grown nearly in different to such terrors, though they still bleated piteously at the unwantedness of their experiences, a tall shepherd rising here and there in the midst of them like a gigantic idol amid a crowd of prostrate devotees. Should the University Campus Be Open to Tourists?

14分档作文

University campuses, especially those of the renowned universities, have recently become the new tourist attractions. Pros and cons have been put forward concerning this new phenomenon.

Some people are quite in favor of the campus’ opening to tourists while others are opposed to it. The opening of campus will stimulate the tourist industry, but the easier access to campus will lead to some accidents or safety problems which will interfere in students’ life.

11分档作文

Nowadays, university campuses are becoming more and more attractive for tourists all around the world. Among those universities, many have a long history. People would love to travel around in the campus, enjoying the historic landscape there.

As a result, wether the university campus should be open to tourists calls for our attention. Some people think that it should. “Because universities are the property of everyone, and it’s good for us to walk around and enjoy the atmosphere of learning,” they may say. However, others hold an opposite opinion. They feel that university students may be disturbed and too many travelers somehow leads to disorder.

In my opinion, tourists may come into the university campus on condition that the number of them is controlled. It’s true that university is our own fortune, and at the same time we should think more for the students who need peace for study.

8分档作文

At present, more and more university campus are being open to tourists. Paying a visit to the university is becoming a new kind of traveling. Meanwhile, it has attracted people’s attention.

Of course, different person has different idea to it whether the university campus should be open to the society, not a place for tourists to visit, the other people agree that the university is a place to be worth visiting. What’s more, they can feel that thick and adamic atmosphere.

In my personal opinion, the university campus shouldn’t be open to tourists. Just as a saying goes, the university is where the students make a deep study. If the campus be open to tourists, students may be absence of mind in study. So, in my mind, the university campus had better not be open to the society.

5分档作文

There are more and more famous university campus becoming interest places people eager about to visit.

With this situation, the problem that whether the university campus should be open to tourists comes to us.

There are two opposite opinions. Some people think it is necessary that the campus is a good place to teach children. The others think they should not be open to tourists, because the visitors may be impact the phenomenon of the study.

In my opinion, the university campus should be open to the visitors who are not only for play, to visit. They should be open to children, because the children will be impacted by the university’s life. The campus should not be open to everyone to reduce the influence of the universities’ study.

2分档作文

In recently, the university campus have been becoming to the new view place which more person are interested in. The famous university in the world take millions of travelers every year and make a lot valou.

People have a lot of opinions for this. Some of them don’t alow it and some other’s opinions are opposite.

In my opinion, I agree with the second view for some reasons. First, It is a economic time in the world. The university should follow the step of the sociation. Second, it can develop university’s applicantce of education. Third, It get more chances to the people who work or study in the university. They could get a lot of new thing from the travelers. At last, student can tough sociation earliy. It can help they adapt to sociation.

Above all is mine.
